Do you have Twitter Follower Envy?

So, do you have Twitter Follow Envy?  Are you looking at how many likes your posts get and how many followers you have?

I know these conversations are happening in people's heads, but I thought I would ask the group what is their thoughts on Twitter Followers?

    1. Does quantity matter?
    2. Is it about the quality and who or what defines that quality of the follower/liker?
      1. Is it more about your Partners following you if you are an ISV?
      2. Is it more about your customer following you if you are a Partner?
      3. Is it more about your competition following you if you are either?
    3. Is there a critical mass for a typical ISV and/or VAR to have? I understand that social influencers or evangelists could have thousands, or tens of thousands, but what about a "typical size VAR or ISV". Do they reach a critical mass at some point and what is that amount?

This is a very interesting dilemma in our social culture of today.  As a parent of a 15-year-old son that is frequently comparing on Instagram the number of likes on a specific post to the number of followers he has, just to realize he is being "ghosted" by hundreds of followers, it seems to be very unhealthy for the psyche.  I couldn't imagine what it is doing to marketers out there.

Even recently, Instagram announced they are doing a pilot program in Canada that will "hide your likes".  Do you really need to know how many people liked your recent picture of your taco plate?  There is nothing formal on the Instagram site but many articles reference it happening – here is the one I "liked" https://later.com/blog/hidden-likes-instagram/  Unfortunately we know that teenage suicide rates are higher due to this social pressure.  I don't think our corporate marketers will get to that point but again, how healthy is this? Will other social media platforms make a change too?

Let me know your thoughts about this interesting perception on social media.

Interesting thought, David. For me, I don't measure Twitter success by quantity, but rather by engagement. Do I see people retweeting my tweets? Commenting? Are they people that I know or recognize their names? That is what gets me excited. I am not too concerned about the numbers.

    Hi David,

I don't dwell too much on the actual engagement within Twitter because for me Twitter is a tool to drive traffic to our website. However, I do focus more on engagement with Instagram because that platform is not "referral" friendly.

    This is an ongoing thing.
At first, Twitter did rely heavily on how many followers people had to quantify if someone was successful. This is why people bought Twitter followers.

This lead to people asking the question "Does it matter how many followers you have if you're not getting engagements?"
It really doesn't matter if you have 10k followers but no one ever likes your tweets, retweets you, or engages with you, there is no point.

It is definitely about quality. I would rather have 50 people that always engage with me, driving me new people, than 10k crickets.

On social in general though, there is actually an endorphin release when someone likes or comments on a status. Endorphins themselves can be addicting (All the happy feels!). This is an interesting article that talks about the addiction behind it.

There are also areas that are starting to use 'social ranking' or 'social credit' which would throw us totally into an episode of Black Mirror.

This engagement is fascinating.  Thank you for the comments.  Brittany, I absolutely love the Black Mirror reference.

I was thinking of putting this out on LinkedIn as an article.  Let me know if you want me to add your comments to the bottom of the article too or if you want you can feel free to repost it there.  I think our internal CMA audience is great to hear from but I would love to hear from the wider audience too.  My re-write will definitely acknowledge the CMA too :)

    Let me know your thoughts!
